Acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte announces a fifth round of terminations at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, describing an approximately 30% staff reduction, hours before the Senate was expected to confirm his replacement.
What happened
Pulte wrote on X that “we are, this morning, Executing a 5th and Near Final Round of TERMINATIONS, an approximately 30% Staff Reduction from Weeks Ago”, and added that the intelligence community must protect the American people, not the political whims of the bloated and corrupt elite class. He did not disclose how many workers were affected, which parts of ODNI were targeted, or whether those affected were dismissed from federal service or returned to their home agencies. The Senate was scheduled to vote that night on Jay Clayton's nomination to serve permanently as director of national intelligence.
Why it matters
The office that arbitrates what the intelligence community reports to the government lost a stated 30 percent of its staff on the last day of an acting director's tenure, with no account of who or which functions. A reduction announced without a figure cannot be checked by the committees that oversee it.
