A US attorney indicts an Olympian after Trump blames vandals for the reflecting pool
A federal grand jury in Washington DC indicted David Hearn, a three-time US Olympian, on a single felony charge over damage to the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool that President Trump had publicly blamed on vandals.
What happened
Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for Washington DC, announced the single felony charge at a press conference, claiming prosecutors had "tremendous evidence" that Hearn had "forcefully and violently" pulled up and removed the bottom liner. Hearn had been arrested the previous month on a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property, after noticing a partly detached piece of the blue liner and reaching into the water to see what it felt like. Trump had alleged that a 300ft "gash" was cut through the sealant; he claimed the federal government would release photographs and video substantiating that, and none had been released.
