DOJ demands Wayne County's 2024 ballots
The Justice Department demanded that Wayne County, Michigan hand over ballots and election records from the 2024 federal election, giving the county 14 days and threatening to seek a court order.
What happened
The letter was signed by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon and rested on a history of fraud convictions and allegations concerning Wayne County election procedures. None of the examples it gave were from 2024, the election being probed. Michigan's attorney general replied that the state stands ready to defend against the claims. It is the first known instance of the Justice Department demanding ballots from the 2024 election, which Trump won.
Why it matters
A federal demand for a completed election's ballots puts the executive inside the custody chain of a state-run count, and the deadline carries the threat of a court order behind it.
