The Justice Department subpoenas X and Reddit to unmask anonymous ICE critics

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, led by Jeanine Pirro, issued grand jury subpoenas to Reddit and X demanding the names, addresses and banking information of anonymous users, as part of criminal investigations into at least two posters who had criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

What happened

The office first used administrative summonses, which bypass judicial review, and withdrew them after legal challenges before escalating to grand jury subpoenas, which are far harder to quash. The targeted users learned of the demands only when the platforms notified them. Neither the users nor their lawyers have been told what crimes are under investigation. One of the posts said only 'expletive ICE'; another was a sarcastic remark containing an address already published elsewhere. Motions to quash are pending before Chief Judge James Boasberg.

Why it matters

Naming an anonymous critic is the point at which criticism starts carrying a personal cost. A grand jury subpoena for identity and banking records, issued out of a criminal investigation into the speech itself and with no stated offense, converts a post into an investigative file on a person.
