A Trump account bought Intel stock four days before Trump announced the government's $8.9 billion stake in Intel

A Trump account bought $250,001 to $500,000 of Intel stock on August 18, 2025, four days before Trump announced the government's $8.9 billion Intel stake.

What happened

On August 18, 2025, an account listed as Investment Account #6 on Donald Trump's 2025 annual financial disclosure bought Intel Corp stock valued at $250,001 to $500,000. The account reported hundreds of purchases and sales dated that day, dozens of them in the same $250,001 to $500,000 range, among them Pfizer, 3M, Blackstone and KLA. Its largest purchases that day, Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia, were each in the $5,000,001 to $25,000,000 range. The filing shows neither share counts nor prices, so the row carries the range's upper bound as paper value and no gain is established. The Office of Government Ethics received the report on June 29, 2026; the reviewing official noted that "The filer paid late filing fees related to transactions not previously reported on 278-Ts." Neither of the two 2025 periodic transaction reports read for this row lists an Intel stock purchase. Four days after the purchase, on August 22, 2025, Intel and Trump announced that the United States government would make an $8.9 billion investment in Intel common stock for a roughly 10% stake. Intel said the stake would be funded by the remaining $5.7 billion in grants awarded but not yet paid under the CHIPS and Science Act and $3.2 billion awarded under the Secure Enclave program, and that with the $2.2 billion in CHIPS grants already received the total government investment was $11.1 billion. The government agreed to buy 433.3 million shares at $20.47 per share, a 9.9 percent stake, as a passive ownership with no Board representation or other governance or information rights. Intel's stock rose 7% on August 22. Trump wrote on Truth Social that he negotiated the deal with Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan and that "The United States paid nothing for these Shares, and the Shares are now valued at approximately $11 Billion Dollars." Asked about the president's trading in May 2026, the White House told CNBC that his assets are held in a trust managed by his children and that "There are no conflicts of interest." The filing does not say who directed the trade, and the filing, Intel's release and the reporting cited here do not connect the purchase to the announcement four days later.

Why it matters

A Trump account bought Intel stock four days before Trump announced the government's $8.9 billion stake in Intel, and Intel rose 7% that day. Trump says he negotiated the deal himself; one of his accounts held the stock. The filing shows neither share counts nor prices, so no profit is established. The White House says his assets are held in a trust managed by his children and there are no conflicts of interest.
